iPhone vs Android in India: Which One Should You Buy?

iPhone or Android? Compare updates, model choice, iMessage and FaceTime, UPI apps, switching tools, privacy controls, repairs in India and dual SIM support.

Seanomos Mobile buyer's guide card: iPhone or Android: which suits you?

In short

No platform wins for every buyer. An iPhone makes sense if you want one company behind the hardware, software and repairs, or if your family already lives on iMessage, FaceTime or an Apple Watch. Android makes sense if you want the widest spread of brands, sizes and budgets. UPI apps such as BHIM are offered on both, so let update support, service access in your city and the ecosystem you already use settle it.

The “iPhone or Android?” question is really a choice between two sets of trade-offs. Below, we line them up on what you live with after the first week: updates, model choice, apps, moving your data, privacy, repairs in India, SIM options and resale. For processor, display or battery numbers, see our guide to reading a phone spec sheet.

How long each one stays updated

Security fixes keep a phone fit for UPI, net banking and OTPs, so treat the support period as part of the price. Our update policy guide compares each brand’s promise; here is the short version.

  • iPhone: Apple makes the handset and iOS, so no second company decides whether your model gets an update. The guide covers what Apple has formally stated about minimum support.
  • Android: the promise belongs to your phone’s brand. At the long end, Pixel Help gives Pixel 8 and later seven years of Android version and security updates, counted from first sale on the US Google Store. Other makers set their own terms, sometimes different for each model.

Tip: Count the support years left from the model’s launch, not from your bill date. A model already two years on shelves has two fewer years ahead.

Choice of models, sizes and budgets

Apple sells a small family of iPhones. Comparing them is quick, but you get fewer sizes, designs and price points, and if none suits your hand or budget there is no other maker to try.

Android runs on phones from many companies, from entry-level handsets to foldables such as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip lines, and some models still take a microSD card. The catch: each brand puts its own interface on top, so menus, preinstalled apps and update habits change when you change brands. If photos decide your shortlist, our camera spec guide helps.

Apps, messaging and accessories

Payments. The official BHIM UPI website links to its app on both Google Play and the App Store. Before switching, open your own bank’s official app page and look for both store badges.

Messages. Apple’s iMessage, RCS and SMS explainer sets out the split. iMessage works only between Apple devices, needs Wi-Fi or mobile data, shows blue bubbles and is always end-to-end encrypted. Texts between iPhone and Android go as RCS or SMS/MMS in green bubbles. RCS on iPhone needs iOS 18 and a network provider that supports it, and encrypted RCS is in beta from iOS 26.5 only where both providers support it. SMS is never end-to-end encrypted. Apps that run on both platforms, such as WhatsApp, avoid the issue.

Video calls. An Android user can join a FaceTime call from a shared link in the latest Chrome or Edge, says Apple’s FaceTime-on-the-web page, but SharePlay and screen sharing are missing.

Watches. Apple’s Apple Watch compatibility page pairs each watch with iPhone models and iOS versions; no Android phone appears. If a smartwatch matters, choose the phone and watch together.

Switching from one to the other

Android to iPhone: Move to iOS

  1. Plug both phones into power and keep Wi-Fi on the Android phone; a USB-C cable between them is faster, per Apple’s Move to iOS guide.
  2. On the iPhone’s Quick Start screen, choose to set up without another device, then From Android. An iPhone already set up must be erased first.
  3. Open Move to iOS on the Android phone, enter the code the iPhone shows, join its temporary Wi-Fi network and pick what to bring.
  4. Keep both phones together until the iPhone’s progress bar ends, even if Android says it is done.

Contacts, messages, photos and videos, files, calendars, call history, mail accounts, bookmarks and WhatsApp chats can move. Music, books and PDFs go by hand, and apps don’t copy, though matching free apps can be downloaded afterwards.

iPhone to Android: copy during setup

Android Help’s iPhone transfer page says to turn off iMessage first and charge both phones. During setup, scan the QR code that newer phones show, or connect the iPhone’s charging cable (with a USB-A to USB-C adapter if needed). The cable route carries apps, messages, photos, contacts, music, notes and WhatsApp history. Without a cable, the Android Switch app (iOS 15 or later) moves only calendars, contacts, photos and videos. Google expects most transfers to take under 30 minutes, longer with lots of data.

Warning: Google says paid apps, in-app purchases, Safari bookmarks, health data and photos kept only in iCloud do not transfer. Download iCloud photos to the iPhone first, and list the paid apps you would need to buy again.

Privacy and security controls

  • iPhone, tracking: since iOS 14.5, apps must ask before tracking you across other companies’ apps and websites, explains Apple’s tracking support page. Ask App Not to Track blocks the advertising identifier while the app keeps working. Under Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking, turning off Allow Apps to Request to Track refuses every future request.
  • Android, permissions: the privacy dashboard (Android 12 and later) shows which apps used the camera, microphone, location and other permissions, and when. Tap an app there to change its access.
  • Android, app scanning: Google Play Protect checks Play Store apps before download, scans apps from other sources, warns you and may remove harmful ones.

Note: Android menu names vary by brand, so use the search bar in Settings. On either side, the best protection is a phone that still gets updates and an owner who installs them.

Repairs and service in India

iPhone. Apple’s iPhone repair page for India offers a Genius Bar or Apple Authorised Service Provider visit, posting the phone in a prepaid box, or a home or office pick-up. Apple’s India store list shows six stores: Saket (New Delhi), Hebbal (Bengaluru), BKC and Borivali (Mumbai), Koregaon Park (Pune) and Noida. Apple uses only genuine parts and guarantees repairs for 90 days or your remaining warranty, whichever is longer. The one-year warranty excludes accidental damage and normal battery wear.

Android. Service depends on the brand:

  • Samsung India has a centre locator by city or PIN code, online appointments, pick-and-drop and doorstep options, and 24×7 WhatsApp support.
  • Pixel Help lists service centres in 23 Indian cities, online repair through the Google Store, and paid pick-up in selected PIN codes. Carry your invoice.
  • For other brands, search the official service locator for your PIN code before you buy.

Dual SIM and eSIM basics

iPhoneApple’s Dual SIM page: iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and later pair a physical SIM with an eSIM; iPhone 13 and later can also run two eSIMs. Both lines call and text, only one uses data at a time, and your operator must support eSIM.
PixelPixel Help: Pixel 3a and later take a physical SIM plus eSIM; Pixel 7 and later can hold two eSIM profiles if the operator allows.
Other AndroidCheck the SIM line on the brand’s Indian spec page.
Checked on Apple Support and Pixel Help, 11 October 2026.

Warning: Imported units may differ. Google notes that US-sold Pixel 10 and later models, apart from the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, are eSIM-only, with no physical SIM slot.

Resale and long-term value

Used prices depend on model, age and condition on both platforms, so there is no fixed rule. Keep the box and GST bill, protect the screen and battery, and remember the next owner gets only the update years left. Before selling, sign out of your Apple or Google account and reset the phone. Our second-hand phone checklist shows what buyers test, and our CEIR blocking guide covers IMEI blocks.

Pros and cons of each side

iPhone

  • One company answers for the phone, its software and repairs.
  • iMessage, FaceTime and Apple Watch work together for Apple families.
  • A built-in switch to refuse cross-app tracking.
  • Repair by post and pick-up, not just in stores.
  • Far fewer models, sizes and price points.
  • Apple Stores in only six Indian locations.
  • Leaving later means switching off iMessage and losing paid apps.

Android

  • The widest range of brands, budgets, sizes and foldables.
  • Long support on some models, such as seven years on Pixel 8 and later.
  • Privacy dashboard and Play Protect show what apps are doing.
  • Big brands offer doorstep or pick-up service.
  • Update length varies widely, so check every model.
  • Service quality depends on the brand.
  • No iMessage or Apple Watch, and FaceTime only through a browser.

Our take

Choose an iPhone if your household already uses Apple devices, you want an Apple Watch, you like dealing with one company for updates and repairs, and an Apple Store, authorised provider or postal repair works where you live.

Choose Android if you want a particular size, budget, foldable or microSD slot, or your contacts and accessories are already on Android. Shortlist models whose update promise outlasts your plans and whose brand has service near your PIN code.

Still undecided? Stay where your data, paid apps and accessories already are. Moving works both ways, but staying costs nothing.

FAQ

Will UPI and my bank’s app work on an iPhone?

BHIM’s official site links to its app on both the App Store and Google Play. For your bank or wallet, check its official listing before switching, and expect to sign in and verify your number again.

Do WhatsApp chats survive a switch?

Yes, with the official tools. Move to iOS lists WhatsApp messages and media, and Android Help includes WhatsApp history in the cable transfer from an iPhone.

Do apps I paid for carry over?

No. Google says paid apps and in-app purchases don’t transfer, and Apple mentions only free matching apps. For subscriptions, ask the developer.

Is an iPhone safer than an Android phone?

Both document strong controls. Day to day, safety depends more on whether your phone still gets security updates, whether you install them, and whether you avoid apps from unknown sources.
