In short
Your phone will display 5G only when all four conditions are met: the operator offers 5G at your location, your recharge covers it, the handset handles India’s 5G bands and runs current software, and the SIM carrying your mobile data is set to 5G. Change the network type to 5G under mobile-network settings, reboot, then open your operator’s app to confirm plan eligibility and coverage.
Bought a 5G handset but the status bar still says 4G? The fix is rarely complicated. Below we start with the two causes we see most, then look at coverage, band support and last-resort fixes.
Shop-floor note: Most people who come to Mobivault asking about missing 5G have one of two problems. Either their recharge does not cover 5G, or the phone’s network type was never moved off 4G. Look at those two first; between them they explain the majority of cases.

Switch your phone’s network type to 5G
Open the settings for whichever SIM handles your mobile data and change its preferred network to 5G. Menu names differ slightly between software versions.
Samsung Galaxy phones
Open Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Network mode and select the entry that begins with 5G. Labels vary slightly from model to model.
Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO phones on HyperOS
Follow Settings → Mobile networks → [your data SIM] → Preferred network type → Prefer 5G. If your phone still runs older MIUI, the first menu goes by “SIM cards & mobile networks” instead.
vivo and iQOO phones
According to vivo’s own instructions, go to Settings → Network & internet → SIM card & mobile network → [SIM], pick 5G (preferred) and then restart the phone. Newer software versions may label the first menu Mobile network.
realme and OPPO phones
On realme UI the route is Settings → Mobile network → [SIM] → Preferred network type → 5G. OPPO owners will find Preferred network type inside the same SIM menu; on older ColorOS builds the first menu is labelled “SIM card & mobile data”.
Google Pixel
Head to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → [SIM] → Preferred network type → 5G (recommended). If 5G still shows up only rarely, Google says Adaptive connectivity can hold it back.
Apple iPhone
5G needs an iPhone 12 or a newer model. Open Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data Options → Voice & Data and select 5G Auto or 5G On. With 5G Auto, the phone drops to 4G whenever 5G would not give a noticeable speed boost, which helps battery life. Also see whether a carrier settings update is waiting in Settings → General → About.
Make sure your recharge includes 5G
- Jio: any plan offering 2GB or more per day carries unlimited 5G. For a 28-day cycle, the lowest price is ₹349, which comes with 2GB a day, and the ₹198 pack (2GB daily, valid 14 days) has unlimited 5G too. Users on 1GB/day or 1.5GB/day packs need the “True Unlimited Upgrade” voucher priced at ₹51, ₹101 or ₹151, matched to the base plan’s validity; it stays valid for the full run of that plan.
- Airtel: selected prepaid plans come with unlimited 5G (from ₹349 upward, per reports in August 2026). You need to activate it yourself: tap “Claim Unlimited 5G Data” inside the Airtel Thanks app. If a fresh recharge leaves 5G eating into your daily data, open the app and claim it again.
- Vi: unlimited 5G is currently an introductory offer. It applies to prepaid unlimited plans starting at ₹299 (postpaid from ₹451), works only inside Vi 5G areas and comes with a fair-use cap of 300GB per month.
Tip: after a new recharge or a fresh SIM, 5G may not appear right away. vivo’s support team says operator activation can take 4 to 48 hours, so give it a full day before attempting bigger fixes.
Find out whether 5G reaches your location
| Network | Where things stand (October 2026) | How to check coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Jio | Standalone 5G, branded “True 5G”, with the 700 MHz band that carries signal inside buildings | MyJio app or jio.com/5g |
| Airtel | 5G Plus on a non-standalone network (it runs alongside 4G) | Airtel Thanks app |
| Vi | Live in selected cities since 2025 and growing | Coverage map at myvi.in/5g |
| BSNL | No 5G for phones yet; mobile 5G is still in testing. Its only 5G offering is a SIM-free home-broadband service (Hyderabad, June 2025) | — |
A 5G city does not guarantee 5G on every street or in every room, and the signal often weakens indoors. If your operator’s coverage check shows nothing at your spot, no change in settings will bring 5G in. And if your calls cut out indoors too, turn on Wi-Fi calling so they go through your home Wi-Fi network.
Confirm your handset works on India’s 5G bands
Being sold as a “5G phone” does not promise support for every band your operator relies on, and imported models are the usual offenders. Look up your exact model on the brand’s official specification page and confirm it lists the following:
| n78 (3.3 GHz band) | Jio, Vi and Airtel all use it as their main 5G band |
| n28 (700 MHz) | Only Jio has this band; its long reach helps 5G get indoors |
| n258 (26 GHz) | mmWave. In India it mostly serves fixed-wireless home broadband, so a phone can run 5G without it |
Sometimes an operator’s app flags your handset as “device not supported” simply because a recent model has not been added to its list. vivo notes that this message on its own will not block 5G, so go through the band list before blaming the phone.
Still showing 4G? Run through these fixes in order
- Switch on Airplane mode, wait 10 seconds, then switch it off. A full restart works too.
- Update the phone to its newest software, since early 5G support is often delivered that way.
- With two SIMs in the phone, confirm that the one carrying the 5G plan is selected for mobile data, because data only goes through that SIM.
- Is your SIM card very old? Samsung recommends a 5G-compatible SIM, and your operator’s store can swap it while you keep the same number.
- Disable any battery-saving mode and check again. Low Power Mode on the iPhone 12 and 13 shuts off 5G apart from video streaming, large downloads and similar tasks, and on the iPhone 12 it blocks standalone 5G too. Pixel’s Battery Saver also switches 5G off.
- If nothing else works, reset network settings. On a Pixel the path is Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Mobile Network Settings.
Warning: the Pixel option clears mobile network settings and nothing else. Many other brands bundle everything into a single reset (such as “Reset Wi-Fi, mobile networks and Bluetooth”), which erases your stored Wi-Fi networks and paired Bluetooth devices. Note down your Wi-Fi password first.
Common questions about 5G
Why is my speed poor even with the 5G icon on?
The icon tells you less than signal strength and network congestion do. Apple says the 5G icon may, in rare cases, show up without real 5G coverage, while Google says it does not confirm your phone is on 5G at that very moment. Run speed tests in several spots; 5G inside a building tends to be weaker than outside.
Will I have to get a new SIM card for 5G?
In most cases, no. Airtel says your current 4G SIM works with 5G. Trouble can come from a very old SIM, and the operator’s store can replace it to sort that out.
Is BSNL 5G available on phones yet?
Not on phones. In June 2025 BSNL soft-launched 5G home broadband in Hyderabad that works without a SIM. Earlier target dates for mobile 5G have been missed; BSNL’s Kerala head said in August 2026 that it was being tested, with December 2026 as the goal, provided its 4G network stabilises first.
Is 5G harder on battery life?
It can be, particularly in spots with a weak 5G signal. That is the reason iPhones include “5G Auto”, which drops back to 4G whenever 5G would not make a difference.
